Exceptional signature: "W.F. Slemons - Monticello - Ark", executed on a 5.5" x 2.25" slip of paper, most likely written during his tenure as a member of the United States House of Representatives. Fine condition.

American politician and secessionist who served as a member of the Arkansas State Convention in 1861. He entered the Confederate States Army in late 1861 and served as a Colonel of the 2nd Arkansas Cavalry under Major General Sterling Price. In the fall of 1864, while fighting in Kansas, Slemons had his horse shot from under him, and he and a large regiment were captured. For the remainder of the war, he was held captive in several Union prisons.
