Boarders Takin In
Original drawing inscribed by the artist. Ink and wash on board. 8.25" x 9". Includes a typed and signed personal letter (dated January 9, 1934) taped to verso in which the artist thanks the recipient for the gift of a book. The drawing is in very good condition. The letter taped to the back is missing a chunk at right edge, but remains legible.
This charming ink drawing shows a disheveled gentleman overseeing the construction of a house, which despite being barely underway, is offering to take in boarders. The artist has cleverly signed his name in a calligraphic style that mimics the bold strokes that describe grass in the foreground of the drawing. There is also a signed inscription at bottom right.
Stuart Hay (1888-1969) was an American cartoonist, illustrator, and architect.
