Item #279132 Tiburtina. Hartmann SCHEDEL.

Tiburtina

Nuremburg: Koberger, Anton, 1493.

Woodcut, uncolored. Page measures 16" x 10 3/4".

From the German edition of the Liber cronicarum (Nuremberg Chronicle). The first secular published book, it tells the history of the earth through seven "ages". As the verso of blat XLV, this piece first depicts a side profile of Secundus the Silent, an Athenian philosopher who took a vow of silence. Below is a fictitious view of the Roman town of Tiburtina. Although many towns and cities in Europe and the Near East are illustrated in the book, 49 of them were printed with only 14 different woodblocks. Therefore, this illustration is identical to the page describing Pisa.
