Excellent Leiden edition of the Italian physician's "classical work on prognosis". G-M 2194 (1st ed. Venice 1601). De praesagienda is "a detailed study of prognostics in which attention is devoted to the patient's mental state and its bearing on health, as well as to the usual physical and diagnostic signs". In addition to being a notable diagnostician, Alpini was an accomplished botanist, one of the first in the 16th century to examine plants outside the context of their therapeutic uses, helping to advance the frontiers of botanical science.
