Two letters signed "Max" to longtime friend and acclaimed political cartoonist Art Young

Martha's Vineyard, MA: 1934.

The first letter is typed, 2 pages (front and back), 8.5 x 5.5 inches, August 29, 1934, from the days when Eastman was a leading radical Socialist, in part: "...It is true that Bob and Lydia do not speak to me, unless I walk right up and compel them to, as I have once or twice for fun. There is a party rule, you know, against 'fraternizing' with Trotskyists, and I really think Bob is afraid to be seen with me..." The other letter is handwritten, 2 pages (front and back), 8 x 4.75 inches, no place, no date, most likely early 1920s, reciprocating with a letter of concern, in part: "...Thank you for your kind letter. I've been feeling bad...I wanted to see you about something special. It didn't happen. Was it my fault? Why did I feel bad?..." Both items are in fine condition.
