The Ocean Burial A favorite and touching Ballad (Bury Me Not on the Lone Prairie)

Oliver Ditson, 1850.

Original sheet music. Folio. 5 Pages bound. Some foxing and thumb prints but still bright and clean.

This sheet music is inscribed as a "New and Improved Edition" of an old song written by Rev. E. H. Chapin. The original song was published in the September 1839 issue of Poe's Southern Literary Messenger. When the words were set to music by George N. Allen, the song became a favorite and soon founds its way into the lumberjack's repertoire as well. After it reached the frontier, the cowboys took it to their hearts and it became the musical standard "Bury Me Not on the Lone Prairie", a song musicologists describe as the most famous western ballad.
