Good signature, "J. Hill Rouse, Chaplain." Reinforced at the spine; some browning and fraying at the edges. The handwriting and signature are dark and bold. Good condition.

Ordained Minister who served with distinction during the American Civil War while assigned to the Twenty-seventh Mass. Regiment of Volunteers. He was one of fifteen members of the Twenty-seventh who went to New Berne, serving as nurses and assistants during the epidemic. Eight of the fifteen died, taking their lives in their hands going into the plague situation. His untiring work in affording consolations of religion to the men of the Twenty-seventh was seen as a silver lining in a murky ground. The death rate from the fever increased to a maximum of 35 men per day and exceeded in percentage of mortality the scourge of Norfolk, Virginia, or at Memphis, Tennessee.
