Many were written in his capacity as Minister while some were to his wife. Earlier in his life, John Dix was a soldier in the U.S. Army rising to the rank of major-general in the Civil War. He was also Secretary of the Treasury under Abraham Lincoln and was a U. S. Senator and Governor from New York State.
