Facsimiles of letters in English by John Dix while United States Minister to France from January 8, 1869 to October 22, 1869. Many were written in his capacity as Minister while some were to his wife. Earlier in his life, John Dix was a soldier in the U.S. Army rising to the rank of major-general in the Civil War. He was also Secretary of the Treasury under Abraham Lincoln and was a U. S. Senator and Governor from New York State.
