Author was an officer in the United States Navy during the Mexican War. "The author went to California in 1846, making a considerable stay at Monterey, San Francisco, and San Jose." Eberstadt 114:189. Howes W-593. He also writes extensively on his adventures in Mexico during the war. After the war, he writes of his stays in Hawaii and Tahiti. This copy contains the following inscription not from the author, "The Author presents this to Mr. Wm Forbes through me as a trifling momento of your Kindness to him... G.W.P. Bissell, Dec. 18th 1849."
