Author received his A.M. in theology from Harvard University. In 1788, Harris was chosen to be George Washington's secretary, but declined the position because he was suffering with smallpox. From 1791 to 1793, Harris was librarian to Harvard University. Then he was pastor of the First Church of Dorchester, Massachusetts from 1793 to 1836. "He (Harris) was for many years (grand) chaplain to the grand lodge of Freemasons in Massachusetts...he often spoke and wrote in defense of Masonry..." DAB VIII, p. 321. S&S 618.
