Newport, RI: 1957.

Silver print, 10.75 x 13.75 inches, Styrofoam mounted, with Hoeffler's full signature, title, and date, in ink, along with his copyright hand stamp on the back. 1957; printed late 1970s. This print is described in the "Rochester Jazz" Photographic Collection as an Exhibition Print of "John Hammond enthusiastically responding to the Count Basie Band at Newport, July 1957." Sitting next to him is his wife Esme O'Brian Sarnoff, former spouse of Robert Sarnoff, Chairman of NBC and RCA Corp. Note: Hammond is considered one of the greatest discoverers of musical talent during the 20th century and is responsible for the careers of Billie Holiday, Count Basie, Bob Dylan, and Bruce Springsteen. Condition: This photograph was originally owned and displayed by Hoeffler as an Exhibition Print and, through handling, there are some minor imperfections, including some surface striations (almost invisible) and flatness and rounding at the corners. Very good(-) condition.

American photographer best remembered for his iconic images of the American Jazz scene of the 1950s and 60s, and whose work was prominently featured in the Ken Burns acclaimed documentary "Jazz." He began this work while pursuing his BFA in Photography at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) where he studied with mentors Minor White and Charles Arnold and visiting photographers Ansel Adams, Ernst Hass, Margaret Bourke-White, Alfred Eisenstadt, Beaumont and Nancy Newhall.
