Description: Measures 3 x 4.5 inches, no place, no date, circa 1780. Rare autographed fragment of a letter signed "J. Amherst" by the British officer who was appointed Governor General of British North America. This portion contains a handwritten salutation in Amherst's hand and includes his signature on the back: "My dear Lady Cornwallis, I have been shock'd beyond measure at your melancholy communication...with many thanks for your kind attention. Sincerely yours, J. Amherst." Light staining; very good condition.
