Rockingham, NC. Excellent example of his full signature: "Walter L. Steele - Rockingham", boldly executed in black ink on a 5.5" x 1.5" slip of paper. American politician who was a delegate to the 1860 Democratic National Convention held at Charleston and Baltimore. In 1861 Steel chaired the North Carolina state convention which passed the Ordinance of Secession, which he helped draft.
