Oliver Ditson, 1850. Original sheet music. Folio. 5 Pages bound. Some foxing and thumb prints but still bright and clean. This sheet music is inscribed as a "New and Improved Edition" of an old song written by Rev. E. H. Chapin. The original song was published in the September 1839 issue of Poe's Southern Literary Messenger. When the words were set to music by George N. Vienna: 1809. Broadside. Printed in Vienna at the Government Palace, July 12, 1809. Measures 14" x 15.25". Bilingual broadside in French and German posted during Napoleon's second occupation of Vienna. The notice demands that the population contribute their subsistence and housing to the French occupying forces. It is interesting to note that a version of this Broadside currently housed in the permanent collection of the University of California at Berkeley appears on the internet in French only. Posted resolutely in front of a tree that mirrors his firm stature, Dumouriez is shown with his sword in hand, fearlessly and even threateningly admiring the sharp tip of his weapon. In this print, a young and old fallow buck lay in a grassy field, with the young buck, distinguishable by his spots, resting his head on the stomach of the older deer. Fallow deer are native to Europe, and the sight is one that would not have been uncommon in the countryside of England, where the print was likely published circa 1840.
