ix, 37 pages. 8vo, modern wrappers. Philadelphia, 1838. First Edition. A rare and valuable copy of this protest by the eminent naval surgeon. Packard (ii, p. 697) states that Barton was merely opposed to the "title, Surgeon General," but the pamphlet makes it clear that he was opposed to the office as well. The DAB states that Barton was apparently opposed to the creation of this new position because he was "jealous of the new office." More

I'd like to say thank you very much for this wonderful book! The parcel arrived yesterday in best condition. Thank you also for the very professional processing, especially the customs formalities. I've already browsed through it briefly: a very interesting work in its original, very well preserved condition. Simply wonderful!
I just finished reading about the store and your family in Nick Basbanes newest book, Patience & Fortitude. I had previously read an article in Book magazine. I wished that I lived near so I could visit your store, it looks and sounds like a place I dream of getting lost in. Basbanes book mentioned that your father began a memoir but was, sadly, unable to finish the work. Would it be in anyway possible to read what must be a great historical adventure in bookselling? I wish you all continued success and a very long existence.
