"The completest account" (DNB) of the life of Crichton, a 16th century Scottish scholar and adventurer, reputedly fluent in 12 languages and no less adept at fenching and horsemanship. He was eventually employed as tutor to the Duke of Mantua's son, who stabbed Crichton to death in a street brawl. The "admirable" epithet is a reference to the many encomiums heaped upon Crichton by his friend Aldus Manutius (grandson of the printer). Lowndes 2736.
