Item #333177 Le Grand Continent par P. Du-Val Geographe Ordinaire du Roy. Pierre DUVAL.

Le Grand Continent par P. Du-Val Geographe Ordinaire du Roy

Paris: Pierre Duval, 1684.

Map. Engraving with hand coloring, mounted for framing and some stains but otherwise in good condition. 17 1/4 x 23 1/2". Second state.

This rare map of Asia and Europe is one of a four sheet world map set. It was rendered in such a way as to allow the lower portion with title to be trimmed off so the sheets could all be joined to form a wall map called 'Carte Universelle du Monde vulgairement dite la Mappemonde'. Many details are included such as Kingdoms, the Great Wall of China, and the sailing route east from Europe to the East via the Northeast Passage around Nowelle Zemle. A wonderful rarity.

Pierre Duval (1618-1683) was the nephew and apprentice of Nicolas Sanson. His widow Marie Desmartz Duval and two daughters continued his business in Paris into the early 18th century. Shirley 689
