Jacea Cretica Laciniata argentea

Jacea Cretica Laciniata argentea

Rome: Sumptibus Bouchard et Gravier.

Botanical print. Copper engraving with hand coloring. Plate 80. Page measures 13 1/2" x 8 3/4"

Richly colored illustration of a flowering knapweed plant native to the island of Crete. This plate was published in Giorgio Bonelli's Hortus Romanus, known as one of the most significant Italian contributions to 18th century botanical printmaking. This rare botanical masterpiece was published from 1772-1793 in an original set of eight volumes. The bold hand-coloring of the images, and in particular their blue borders, makes these images stand out as beautiful exemplars of Italian engraving in the 18th century. Some creases and toning but otherwise in good condition.

Giorgio Bonelli (1742-1782) was an Italian physician and doctor. This background likely led to his interest in botanicals and his publication of the first volume of Hortus Romanus, which was expanded and republished over the next 20 years.
