Item #309733 East River. Louis Leon DOLICE.

East River

Etching. Signed in pencil. Measures 6 1/8" x 7 3/8"

This lovely etching depicts New York City's East River from a sailboat. Other boats are docked at the pier, and a bridge is faintly visible in the background. Signed and dated 1922 in the plate, and signed in pencil in the lower right corner. The print is in very good condition with some toning and glue in margins but not affecting the image. Louis Leon Dolice (1892-1960) was an Austrian-born artist who moved to New York City in 1920. The city's environs, particularly in Greenwich Village, quickly inspired him to produce the etchings of local buildings and streets that would define his career. He became particularly well-known for documenting the historical parts of the city--such as docks, el trains, and old buildings--that, in this period, were quickly disappearing. This beautiful print exemplifies how Dolice used his skills to convey his love for his adopted home.
