Rev. Edward Mitchell

New York: Peter Maverick, 1820.

Print. Engraving. Image measures 8 1/2" x 7"

Finely engraved portrait of Reverend Edward Mitchell (1769-1834), a printer and minister born in Ireland and based in New York. He published several religious texts -- including hymn books, sermons, and pamphlets -- for the Society of United Christian Friends. This print was engraved by Peter Maverick after a painting by Waldo & Jewett, a portrait studio led by American painters Samuel Lovett Waldo and William Jewett. In very good condition, with overall toning and wear to margins.

Peter Maverick (1780-1831) was a prominent 19th century engraver based in New York and Newark. He was the son of Peter Rushton Maverick (1755-1811), also an engraver and print-maker, and began working with his father at the age of 9. He is best known for engraving several important maps of New York City, including the Commissioner's Plan of 1811.
