Romare Beardon (1911-1988) was an American artist, social worker, and writer. He was a founding member of both the Harlem-based art group known as The Spiral and of the Black Academy of Arts and Letters. He was elected to the National Institute of Arts and Letters in 1972, and received the National Medal of Arts in 1987.
