Map. Uncolored copperplate engraving. Image measures 13.5" x 9 1/8".

This map of the East Indies extends from Formosa (present-day Taiwan) to Borneo and from the Philippines to Pegu (now Bago in Myanmar), including Southeast Asia. Insets to the right depict Guam and the Mariana Islands in Micronesia. Arrows in the South China Sea depict monthly trade winds. Mountains are labeled pictorially. The map is in good condition with offsetting in the South China Sea and a small chip to the bottom edge, not affecting the image. Rigobert Bonne (1727-1795) was one of the most important cartographers of the late 18th century. He served as Hydrographer to France, and during his term, he produced a numbered of detailed and useful maps, particularly of coastal regions. His work is often devoid of decorative cartouches and compasses roses and marks a turn in European mamaking away from decoration toward practicality. This map is a quintessential example of his significant work.
