Chiesa della Madona de Miracoli, Monache Francescane / Ecclesia Virginis Deiparae Miraculorum / L'Eglise de Notre Dame des Miracles

Leiden: Johann Georg Graevius.

Map. Copper plate engraving. Image measures 10 1/2" x 13 1/2"

Finely engraved view of the Church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli in Venice. Figures are depicted in the foreground, stopping in the plaza or on the bridge to chat. Men are seen unloading cargo from their boats on the canals. A group burns a bonfire near the adjacent building. This plate was published by Pieter van der Aa after a similar print by Luca Carlevaris, an Italian artist regarded as the "father of the Venetian vedute [view]", who popularized the genre with his set of etchings published in 1703. Van der Aa reproduced these images with minor alterations, and the engravings were widely published and distributed throughout the 18th century. In very good condition, with chips, tears, and minor foxing to margins, not affecting the image.

Pieter van der Aa (1659-1733) was a Dutch publisher, editor and bookseller based in Leiden, Netherlands. He started his own publishing and auction house at the age of 21 and went on to produce thousands of maps and prints. Van der Aa is credited to pioneering a separate artwork for the border.
