Rare panoramic view of the Catskill Mountains in New York. The center image depicts the view from Mt. Hope in Ulster County, showing High Point Mt., Friday Mts., Mt. Cornell, Wittenberg Mt., Cross Mt., and Samuel's Point, with their respective elevation in feet. Surrounding the panorama view are six vignettes - Horse-shoe bend viewed from summit, Pine Hill, Ulster County viewed from summit, Delaware County viewed from summit, Horse-shoe bend, and Belle-Ayre Mountain & Pine Hill Station. In this panorama, he illustrates various attractions accessible by the Ulster and Delaware Railroad, which opened in 1875 and is visible in some of the vignettes.
The images were sketched from nature by Henry Schile. He visited the Catskills in 1881, writing of his travels in "Illustration of the Catskill Mountains, Sketched from Nature: A Special Guide." In the preface, he writes "IF there is any resort which can afford the much needed rest and recreation to one who is worn out with the cares and troubles of a city life, surely it is the Catskill Mountains. How delightful a pastime to roam in the free, balmy, spring-like air of a mountainous country! A luxury to all, but especially to those who constantly breathe the salt air from the ocean. In this respect the Catskill Mountains are unequaled." This print is in very good condition. Archival tape repairs to margins, not affecting the image. Minor toning.
