Edith Cavell (1865-1915), an English nurse based in occupied Belgium during the war, who was executed by the German military for sheltering British and French soldiers in her home and helping them escape to the Netherlands. Her execution garnered widespread publicity, making her an iconic propaganda figure for British military recruitment, and helped increase favorable American sentiment toward the Allies.
