Lovely depiction of an two varieties of succulents in a decorative vessel from the four-volume study of flowers and plants, "Phytanthoza Iconographia" edited by Johann Weinmann between 1737 and 1745. Both accurate and beautiful, these prints were the first botanical color mezzotints, a revolutionary method that allowed for subtlety and detail. Weinmann (1683-1741) was a renowned pharmacist whose plant studies earned him scientific acclaim among botanists. He employed several botanical artists and engravers to assist with the project including Seuter, Johann Ridinger, Johann Jakob Haid and most notably Georg Dionysus Ehret.
