"Henry Cruse Murphy [1810-1882] was an American politician and historian. A native of Brooklyn, he became city attorney and in 1842, mayor. The following year he became a member of Congress. He was elected a delegate to the New York State Constitutional Convention of 1846 and in 1852 was a candidate for the Democratic nomination for President. He was appointed Minister to the Netherlands in 1857 and, on his return in 1861, he served for six terms in the New York State Senate. He is best known for his researches into the early Colonial history of New York."
