Stati E Territorii Occidentali della Unione Americana

Genoa: 1858.

Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Sheet measures 18 3/8" x 13 1/4". Image measures 13 1/4" x 11".

This map of the western United States was published in Francesco Constantino Marmocchi's "Curso di Geografia Comerciale". Showing the region west of the Mississippi River, the map includes state names, cities, rivers, lakes, and forts labeled in Italian. Despite being published several years after the Gadsden Purchase, the map depicts the southern border with Mexico along the Gila River. The state shapes are unusually depicted. Kansas covers the territory from the Nebraska River to the Red River, and west to the Rio Grande, and Nebraska covers the entire region north of the Nebraska River, from the Missouri River to the Rocky Mountains. This map also features one of the earliest appearances of an 'Arizona' (Arrissonia), and the only known example to label the region south of the Mexican border. Relief is shown by hachure. Engraving by G. Bonatti. Water staining to upper margin, extending to upper right corner of the image.

Francesco Constantino Marmocchi (1805-1872) was a geographer, cartographer, and Italian patriot. Self taught in the natural sciences, he began his career as a naturalist, publishing a book on the animal kingdom. After his involvement with Giuseppe Mazzini and the insurrectional political association "Giovine Italia", he was imprisoned and eventually forced into exile, where he began teaching geography. He continued to produce numerous works.
