This 1552 woodcut map depicts the city of Tunis, its fortifications, and its surroundings - including the ruins of Carthage and the port of La Goleta. Verso has explanation in Latin. Professor Sebastian Munster (1488-1552) was a German cosmographer, humanist, theologian and scholar. This Ptolemaic map appeared in Munster's seminal work "Cosmographia", considered the most popular book of the 16th century with numerous editions published in several languages over a 50 year span. Munster is also credited with contributing to a revival in geography in Germany. This view is a fine example of his work.
