The Mystery of The Leaping Fish

Poster. Offset lithograph. 40.75" x 27". Unlined

A theatrical movie poster for the 1916 short comedy film starring Douglas Fairbanks, Bessie Love, and Alma Rubens. A short silent film about a drug-abusing detective, this comedy is a parody of Sherlock Holmes and a lighthearted portrayal of cocaine and opium use in the early 20th century. A year prior to the film's release, the Harrison Act was put into effect, beginning an increasingly strict attitude towards drug enforcement and use in America. Original poster re-issue circa 1961. Folded as issued. Repair to the upper right margin. The film was written by Tod Browning, best known for directing 'Dracula' (1931) and 'Freaks' (1932), and directed by John Emerson. Hard to find poster of a unique cult film.
