Kaisei chiri shoho ansha no zu. Revised wall picture of Chiri shoho (Primary geography to learn by heart); 1875 Japanese Meiji Era map for Elementary Geography

Osaka: Cnogi Ichibe, 1875.

Woodblock map.

This rare and incredible woodblock Japanese pedagogical map by Chisokukan Shokyoku is a geography-teaching object from a school classroom during the Meiji period. Dating to 1875, the map is divided into blocks, with four showing eastern and western hemispheres, longitude and latitude, eleven showing land forms, and seven showing scenes. The map depicts an almost abstract beauty in its mix of cartographic and illustrated blocks.

The map is in good condition with pictorial insets on 4 sheets joined. It may have been used for military training for marching troops as alluded to in the title Folds into original embossed yellow self-wrappers with printed paper title label and original string hanging loops. Shows minor wear to cover. Small area of vermin damage at lower margin. This is a great example of Japanese art and works of cartography.
