Le Cours du Fleuve Missisipi selon les Relations les plus mondernes; [The Course of the Missisipi River, According to the Most Modern Relations]

Amsterdam: 1737.

Map. Original engraving. 14.75 x 17.25 inches.

Beautiful 1737 map of North America featuring giant scaled Great Lakes. Lake Huron is referred to as Karegnondi, an indigenous name meaning big lake or fresh water sea. Possible reference to Manitoulin Island (the largest fresh water island in the world) as 'Cantolon'. Many portage routes are described throughout. Indigenous villages and architecture is noted along with Jesuit settlements. The largest significant French towns that are noted are Quebec City and New Orleans. The Mississippi River too far to the west with its mouth in what is present day Texas. Cape Cod is named as 'Hollandia'. Lower right margin trimmed, some toning but otherwise in good condition. From Recueil de Voyages au Nord. A wonderful early map of the region.
