Toto mesto je ve spolecne peci obyvatel montaz [This Town is under the Control of its Citizens].

Prague: Ceskoslovensky Spisovatel, 1967.

Illustrated throughout with 52 well-printed photogravures by Miroslav Peterka, and text by noted Czech writer Bohumil Hrabal, whose works were banned after the 1968 Soviet invasion. 96 pages. Tall slim 8vo, black cloth with green lettering, original d.w. Prague: Ceskoslovensky Spisovatel, 1967. First edition. Very minor fading to edges of cloth but interior is fine and clean, d.w. is lightly rubbed and with several tiny tears and chips at top edge. A near fine copy, complete in a very good(+) original dust wrapper. Quite scarce, and moreso as this copy is signed by Hrabal on title page.

"Peterka details a familiar iconography of photographic melancholia - abstracted signs, mysterious doorways, peeling and crumbling walls, miserable-looking people on the streets, a broken mask lying by a lamp-post. With these apparent cliches, he creates an atmosphere of gloom and uncertainty, mirroring the alienated lives of modern man." -- Badger, The Photobook Vol II, p.222/223.
