Important T.L.S. 4to. 1 page, personal letterhead, New York City, February 4th 1959, to Brooke Astor, sending his condolences on the death of her husband and his close friend Vincent Astor, in full: "I was terribly sorry when I heard the announcement of Vincent's death. He was truly a great friend of mine down through the years and it was always a delight to see him and talk with him. I think our last meeting was at the [MacDonald] Colony several weeks ago. While I realize how futile words are at a time like this, I want you to know that you have my heartfelt sympathy in your loss and sorrow." *Upon Vincent Astor's death on February 3rd 1959, Brooke took immediate charge of all the philanthropies to which he left his fortune. Besides being a socialite and chairperson of the Vincent Astor Foundation, she was the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998 from Bill Clinton in recognition of her generosity in being one of the greatest philanthropists of all time.
