Author began his service in the Continental Army in Massachusetts as a brigadier-general, including at the Battle of Bunker Hill. During 1777 and 1778 Heath was commanding the Eastern District and he was guardian of Burgoyne's army after Burgoyne's surrender. He served until 1783, mostly commanding the lower Hudson region.
