Author was a missionary with the London Missionary Society. He lived in Hawaii from 1822 to 1824. The text of this volume was written by William Ellis based on notes made by him and his fellow travelers during an extensive tour of the islands in 1823. While living in Hawaii, Ellis learned the Hawaiian language. One of the maps depicts all of the Hawaiian Islands and the other illustrates only the Island of Hawaii.
