Nieuwe Kaart van het Eyland Japan

1724.

Map. Engraving. 17 1/4" x 22".

Beautiful example of this highly detailed map of Japan, from Valentyn's Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indien, one of the earliest contemporary maps to report information drawn from the Dutch V.O.C. The map shows each of the Japanese provinces, with place names along the route from Nagasaki to Jedo. The place names are all given in Dutch nomenclature. Francois Valentyn (1666-1727), was a Dutch Minister and served under the East India Company. He was a naturalist and a writer who spent 16 years in the East Indias. Oud en Nieuw Oost-India (1724-26) was a massive work of five parts published in eight volumes and containing over one thousand engraved illustrations and some of the most accurate maps of the Indies of the time.
