History of the Supreme Court case Gideon v. Wainwright. Earlier Clarence Earl Gideon robbed a poolroom and was convicted of robbery. He was too poor to afford a lawyer. Gideon appealed his conviction while in prison to the Supreme Court. The court's decision was in favor of Gideon that he had the right to be represented in his robbery case even if he could not have afforded a lawyer. Gideon was granted a new trial for the robbery conviction and was acquitted.
