French-born American stage actress who gained great notoriety for her penchant for wearing men%u2019s attire both in the street and on the stage. She is believed by many to have been one of the very first openly gay female stage personalities of the 19th century. Bennett died all alone in poverty at age 29 of tuberculosis.
