Fabulous oversize portrait of Charles Philippe, the Count of Artois - later Charles X of France. He was known as a charming, frivolous and impulsive King and before the Revolution, as a Count, he was a close friend of Marie Antoinette. Text reads 'S.A. Royale, Monsieur, Charles-Philippe de France, Comte d'Artois, Colonel-General de Garde Nationale. Ne a Versailles le 9 Octobre 1757'. Henri Buguet, a French historical and portrait painter, was born at Fresne in 1761. He was a pupil of Jacques Louis David, and painted in 1817 for the château of Pau 'Francis I. knighted by Bayard.' His portraits of Louis XVIII and Charles X have been engraved by Bertrand. He died in Paris about 1833. Hard to find.
