Outstanding typed letter signed about Franklin D. Roosevelt

Outstanding letter in which Landon lambastes Franklin D. Roosevelt in regards to the Panay Incident -- the unprovoked attack on an American Vessel by Japanese planes. 1 page on personal stationery, 10.5 x 7.25 inches, December 28, 1937, to powerful New York attorney Frederic R. Coudert, in part: "...It is a difficult thing for a man to cross his party lines. This is especially true in view of the bitterness which the President has engendered and the lack of confidence in his conclusions, prompted by his evident hasty decisions in the past. Unquestionably there is a changed disposition on the part of a great many good Americans. And as you say, it is of the greatest interest and importance. I have said on numerous occasions that we needed an old-time spiritual revival as it were, in this country -- something that would put fire into the bellies of our fellow countrymen. I expected to receive a good bit of criticism from partisan and pacifist sources, but I am distressed at what you aptly termed the submissive sentiment that is prevalent..." Note: Roosevelt initially proposed to his Cabinet a blockade of Japan, but settled for an apology from the Japanese Government with reparations. He had simply gone as far as he could with the American people who were not outraged, but rather more than willing to take a pacifist stand. Small creases at the corners, but still in very good condition overall.
