Rare autographed manuscript signed "A. Tennyson"

1880.

3 x 6.5 inches, the complete first stanza of "Tears, Idle Tears," a lyric poem written in 1847 and published as one of the songs in "The Princess," five lines including: "Tears, idle tears, I know not what they mean, Tears from the depth of some divine despair, Rise in the heart & gather to the eyes, In looking on the happy autumn fields, and thinking on the days that are no more." One of his most Virgilian poems and perhaps his most famous. This item, written perhaps around 1880, is evenly toned with half-inch separations at the left and bottom folds, far from the text.
