New York: Red Cross.
Original poster. Color lithograph. 27.27 x 20.25 inches.
This famous World War I propaganda poster was issued to promote the Red Cross in circa 1917 and was one of the most famous Red Cross posters during the war. It features a monumental Red Cross nurse cradling a wounded soldier on a stretcher. Evoking Michelangelo's Pieta where Mary holds the baby Jesus, this poster proved to be highly effective. A large Red Cross is seen in the top left with text at the bottom reading "The Greatest Mother in the World".
While men signed up to fight at the front, women were encouraged to help the war efforts in supporting roles. This poster reportedly encouraged millions of Americans to join the Red Cross. Created by Alonzo Earl Foringer. This poster in is good condition with minor edge wear and foxing. Original linen backing.
