This lovely view dating to 1856 depicts a Buddhist temple in Ceylon or Sri Lanka. The foreground depicts people sitting and chatting while others are praying on the steps leading up to the temple. Beautifully surrounded by palm trees and woods, the temple is seen in the background. This view, drawn from nature by Wilhelm Heine with figures by Eliphalet Brown Jr. and lithographed by George Ackerman appears in Francis Hawk's 'Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan Performed in the years 1852, 1853, and 1854, under the Command of Commodore M. C. Perry'. In good condition with minor foxing.
Dr. Francis Lister Hawks (1798 - 1866) was an American priest of the Episcopal Church, and a politician in North Carolina.
