This lovely 1856 map of the Lew Chew or Loochoo or the Ryukyu Islands of Japan located between Japan and Taiwan or Formosa. Okinawa Island, the largest of the island chain is labeled here as Great Lew Chew Island. Extends from Kuchinoshima to Yonaguni of the Miyakojima group of islands. The map notes topography and identifies islands, points, bays, and other topographic features.
This map appeared in Francis Hawks' 'Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan Performed in the years 1852, 1853, and 1854, under the Command of Commodore M. C. Perry'. Lithography by Ackerman. The map is in good condition with minor foxing and offsetting.
