This beautiful view features the Harbor of Macao in Southern China with sailing vessels and buildings along the waterfront in the background. The foreground of the view shows porters with shoulder poles and a group of nuns in the lower right. This view by Wilhelm Heine appeared in Francis Hawk's 'Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan Performed in the years 1852, 1853, and 1854, under the Command of Commodore M. C. Perry'. The view is in good condition with minor foxing and staining, especially along the margins.

Dr. Francis Lister Hawks (1798- 1866) was an American priest of the Episcopal Church, and a politician in North Carolina.
