Chicago: A. J. Nystrom & Co.
Roller map. Includes hanging bracket. Measures 27" x 49.75".
This map of average global precipitation uses a limited palette of cool colors to convey the climates of each region of the world. Yellow indicates areas with under 10 inches annually, while dark blue covers those that are soaked yearly in over 80 inches. Between them, shades of green, teal, and blue create pleasing gradients that contribute to an overall charming map. Blue lines of latitude and longitude on a bright white background add an extra touch to the map, which despite its intended use in the classroom would have looked right at home alongside contemporaneous post-war graphic design.
The map is in good condition.
Founded in Chicago in 1903, A.J. Nystrom and Company is the oldest publisher of educational maps and globes in the United States. Innovative in quantity and quality, the firm is well-known for the achievements of managing editor C.A. Burkhardt, who was the first to simplify map designs for the benefit of children. This dedication to education remains a theme of the company today and is clearly behind this lovely map of the world.
