South Italy. John ARROWSMITH.

South Italy

London: Arrowsmith, John, 1840.

Map. Engraving with hand outline. Sheet measures 25.75" x 22".

This beautiful 1840 map by John Arrowsmith depicts the southern portions of Italy from Tuscany south to includes all of Sicily. The Maltese Islands are included in an inset in the lower right. Throughout, the map labels numerous cities, towns, roads, rivers, islands and renders elevation by hachure.

The Kingdom of Naples or the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies (as the region was called at the time), was witnessing the movement for the unification of Italy. It was also at the time the richest and largest Italian state before the unification of Italy.

The map is in very good condition with minor wear along the centerfold and some minor offsetting and spotting. John Arrowsmith (1790-1873) was from a family of London based cartographers and publishers, and was a founding member of the Royal Geographical Society. His "London Atlas," known for its understated elegance, is considered one of the first truly "modern" atlases of the nineteenth century. This map is a fine example of Arrowsmith's work.
