Fine-content Autographed Letter Signed

New York: 1951.

1 page on goldenrod paper, 11 x 8.5 inches, no place, but almost certainly New York City, March 9, 1951. Written to Bert McCord, entertainment writer for the New York Herald Tribune, pertaining to a possible project, in full: "Since I do nothing (to my horror!) but answer phone calls all day, I was surprised at your item. Anyway, concerning that project - it has just been a meeting or two with Mr. Kilpatrick & the author of the novel. Perhaps something will come of it, perhaps not; but the material contains a beautiful insight into American life, which is why it interests me. With Regards & thanks, Clifford Odets." Note: in 1951 Clifford Odets' life was a mess. At the time this letter was written, he was deep into divorce proceedings with wife Bette Grayson and was already informed that the HOUSE UN-AMERICAN ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE intended to interview him. The project he discusses was supposed to be a collaboration with Noel Huston on a dramatization of "A Stretch on the River," to be produced by Thomas Kilpatrick. It never materialized. Horizontal folds; small chip in the left margin, but still in very good condition.

American playwright, screenwriter, and director.
