Castilla avrifera cvm vicinis provinciis. Cornelius VAN WYTFLIET.

Castilla avrifera cvm vicinis provinciis.

1611.

Map. Copper-plate engraving. Image measures 9 x 11.5". Sheet measures 11.25 x 14.5".

This rare map of Colombia shows the northern segment of the country, covering the coastline as it extends from the Caribbean Sea south the Andes Mountains. Panama, also included, runs into the title cartouche, which symbolically demarcates the depicted South American regions from unseen Central America. The map primarily renders forts as they have sprouted up along the main rivers. It is a later version of a map first published in Wytfliet's 1597 atlas, which contains some of the first printed maps of the New World as well as a history of the voyages of Columbus, Pizarro, Verrazano and other explorers. The map is in very good condition with wide margins. Some wormholes in margin not affecting the image. Cornelius Wytfliet (c. 1550--1597) was a Belgian cartographer who dedicated his work to Spain. He used the writings of both historians and contemporary geographers to render the geography natural history, and European discovery of the Americas. This map is a fine example of his work.
